Objectives

Today, some immigrants receive language training and social orientation information about their host society. However, this information does not touch upon human rights, women rights or the rights of child.

Our experience in prevention of HVB shows that not only should women be informed about their rights, but this information should be extended to the entire family, as they are part of the woman’s social environment.

Our conviction is that both men and women should receive awareness raising and training in human rights and information about legal and social consequences if these rights are abused.

The purpose of the project is to further develop the inclusion of thematic subjects concerning European Conventions on Human Rights and HBV in language training for immigrants through cooperation between language training centres and NGOs for immigrants.

The general objective will be achieved by::

  1. Creating structures for cooperation between language training centres and immigrant NGOs;
  2. Training language teachers and NGOs representing immigrants in using the material during the language training;
  3. Developing effective teaching bi-lingual materials in the language of the country and languages of the target groups together with NGOs representing immigrants;
  4. Including training based on the material in the ordinary activities of NGO’s representing immigrants for both men and women;
  5. Creating a virtual network among NGOs representing immigrants in different EU-countries on the subject of HBV for continuation of activities after termination of the project.

The direct target groups are men and women who have permission to settle in a member state, for a dialogue on fundamental human rights and language training in the language of the host country and also in their own language, through cooperation with NGOs representing immigrants. Based on the knowledge acquired through training, the NGOs will facilitate a dialogue focused on changes in attitude regarding HBV.

The HRs in Practice Consortium consists of organisations from five European countries (Greece, Sweden, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Germany), that have been chosen in accordance with the project’s aims. They all have research expertise on violence against women and gender equality issues.

All partners have wide experience in working with NGO’s representing immigrants with regards to social integration, elaboration and implementation of training packages and work on a daily basis in collaboration with other organisations (private & public) and Networks in local, national and European level.
